Paul James, global brand leader

Paul James, global brand leader at St. Regis Hotels and Resorts, estimates that he spends no less than 150 nights a year in hotel rooms. His experience goes well beyond his own company’s brand; he often checks out the competition by staying at other hotels.

Over time, Mr. James has developed a number of tricks to make sure his hotel stays are comfortable. For instance, after booking a room online, he immediately follows up with a phone call to the hotel’s concierge. His aim: to request a room that will suit him.

‘Unless you’re at an airport hotel, you’ll find that there are a vast number of shapes and designs of rooms within the raft of standard or deluxe rooms,’ he says. Sometimes he wants to ensure there’s a large work table; occasionally, he wants extra room with a crib for his son. And because he’s over six feet tall, he always makes sure to ask for a king-sized bed.

It never hurts to ask’ if you have a special need in mind while checking in, whether it’s a specific view, a larger sofa, a mini refrigerator (not all hotels provide them), or a room on the executive floor — ‘even if it’s just a bowl of fruit,’ Mr. James says. ‘It’s surprising how much a hotel generally can do and can provide for you once you get there,’ he says.

One key to getting what you want is making a convincing argument for it. ‘It’s those people who tend to have a good reason who get what they want — whether it’s getting a larger room because you’re going to be meeting some people in your room or you’re celebrating a birthday or an anniversary,’ he says. When Mr. James is checking into a hotel, he always makes sure he’s nicely dressed. Typically he’ll show up in a suit or slacks and a jacket. ‘If you look the part, you’ll tend to get looked after a little bit better,’ he says. But he notes that some guests can look like they ‘just walked off the tennis court’ and still get five-star treatment if they ‘talk and communicate’ well. It helps if a guest ‘engages with the person that they’re talking to as a human being, being pleasant and engaging and not overly demanding or difficult or obtuse or overly distracted,’ he explains.

He doesn’t usually request an upgrade unless something is very wrong with the room, noting that members of good loyalty programs can get regular upgrades without having to ask.

Throughout his stay, Mr. James goes out of his way to be nice to the concierge. ‘That’s rule No. 1,’ he says, noting that he’ll often stop at the concierge desk to thank the staff after a recommendation has paid off.

Such positive reinforcement typically results in the concierge staff offering better service and sightseeing advice over the course of a trip, he says. ‘If you reward them with a, ‘That was great — more like that, please,’ it could help open up a whole raft of new access points to the city,’ he says. Your feedback will also give them more clues to what you’re looking for.

If the concierge has performed a significant task for you, it’s nice to tip him or her that day, he says, but tipping at the end of the stay is perfectly acceptable, too.

When Mr. James is staying in a U.S. hotel, he generally tips the concierge $10 to $20 a day, depending on how much he has used the service. Bellhops who carry his luggage get $2 to $5, and he always leaves $2 to $4 a day in an envelope for housekeeping. Chopper Tattoo Review

Mr. James leaves the total tip for housekeeping in the room just before he checks out, rather than leaving it out as a daily amount. At the end, he says, ‘you just have a better idea of how you’ve been looked after.’

Last saturday, my husband with me took a free trip to zhouzhuang due to friend’s help. Located in kunshan county in jiangsu province, zhouzhuang is famous for water town .Tradional houses, old brigers and narrow river which is able to maintain its culture and historial site has became the best characters in zhouzhuang ,especially worldwide two birdges .
Despite the fact that the weather is sunny,we got there with full joy before 9 o’clock in order to have much time to visit. On entering the gate ,what surpise me most is not beautiful scenery but crowded people ,even some foreign friend. It seems that i must be ready for struggle.
First we walk along the road alowly. On one side of the stone road is standing traditional houses ,in which varies of good were sold ,such as pearl, comb made of ivory and clothes,on the opposite there is the long and narrow river. At afternoon, we paid a visit to worldwide two bridges. On arrivin that ,tours were telling theliterary quotation while travellers were surrounding and watching it.The appearance of one briger is arch, at right angle linking another square brider. Then we visited the zhang hall and Shen hall famou for rich and powerful people called Shen Wanshan
There is a proverb saying : up above there is heaven ,down below there are suzhou and hangzhou.Maybe the lack of the historial knoeledge, I hardly understand the true soul of zhouzhuang ,although it is well-known.What impress me most is crowded people and old bridges bulit 200 years ago.Perhaps compared to modern society, ancient bulidings show their great value because of its rare and historic.
But to tell the truth, living in that quiet environment such as in zhouzhuang , no TV, no computer and washing clothes in the river , sitting under the tree and chatting with others , people prevent from competetion and radiation and have a simple and quiet life.

A Cheerful Trip To Dongtin Hu

There was an old saying: “If the harvest in Hunan and Hubei is good, then the country will not need to worry the hunger issue”, from this saying we could see the great importance of Hunan and Hubei in the ancient time. As the population has been growing steadily, today we have much more people in our country; maybe the saying is not that true any more. But these two provinces are still remaining one of biggest food producers in China nowadays.

Dongtin Hu( Dongtin Lake), is the second largest fresh water lake in China, which is between Hunan and Hubei, and providing great convenience for shipping transportation, fishing, and farming. The lake covers an area of 3,968 square kilometers, with the deepest part of 30.8 meters. It is also being one of the key water preservation areas for the Yangtze River. Besides, there are many types of fresh water fish living in the lake such as Chinese river dolphin, Chinese sturgeon and 59 types carps, and many types of valuable birds living there as well.
The lake was very famous for its splendid view and ancient constructed towers by the lakesides, so it attracted many poets, distinguished scholars and heroes to visit and left many popular inscriptions and poems.

Having passed Dongtin Hu many times when I traveled by trains to Beijing or other cities across the Yangtze River, but never stopped and visited this beautiful place before. During this Dragon Boat Festival, I got the chance and toured this dreaming place.
After hours traveling by train from Guangzhou, I arrived at Yueyang, a medium size city with a history of 2500 years by the Dongtin Hu. After visiting Zhangguying Village, I returned to the city again. Then I took a cab to go to the lake side. After a quick drive inside the city, soon I reached the square. I noticed there was a huge stone sculpture standing in the middle: a powerful guy holding an arrow on his hands and ready to shoot a huge fierce snake with the mouth opening. The sculpture indicating an old tale that the snake always made troubles in the lake, so the hero Houyi killed this trouble-maker snake, and the snake bone became the hills of this area.

The towers in the square also worth to be mentioned, among which the most famous one Yueyang Lou(Yueyang Tower), was to be built in the Dong Han Dynasty, where Lu Su a general from the Wu Kingdom inspected his troops; in 1880 during the Qing Dynasty, it was rebuilt. And it has been considered as one of the three most well-known towers around the Yangtze area. Besides, there were a few other old towers which showing the great talent of ancient architecture. And the park by the lake side was also worth visiting.

An old stone-path street Bainhe Street was just located by the lake side. The old stage in the middle was having the shows of interesting local opera, and folk dance;and wonderful piano from pianoforall; and different shops were selling the traditional wines, specialties and a few restaurants serving the delicious fishes, crabs, shrimps and other types of seafood from the lake. There were lots of visitors and local people wandering around, so the atmosphere was exciting and cheerful.

I went to a well-known restaurant inside the Bianhe Stree, and took a seat by the window on the second floor, and ordered a big bottle of cold beer, and a large lake fish called huiyu(the color of fish was pink and the meat looked like jade), the taste of the fish was very delicious and the meat was tender.

When the sun was ready to set, I could see lots of ships sailing up and down under the golden color of sunshine; the wind from the lake was blowing slightly. The view was marvelous over the lake.
